MORE ANTHRAX ?

DREAD DISEASE SAID TO HAVE APPEARED IN A HERD OF CATTLE NEAR BEACH RIDGE

(10.11.01) North Tonawanda, May 29. -Anthrax, it is beleived, has broken out in a large herd of cattle on the farm of Samuel White near Beach Ridge Station. So far three cattle have succumbed. Four cows are suffering, but hopes are entertained for their recovery.

The disease was first noticed among Mr. White's cattle last sunday when they were being driven home from pasture. A couple of them followed the fence striking their heads frequently against the rails, as if they could not see where they were going. When in the barn they would not eat or stand. Dr. H.S. Wende of Tonawanda was summoned and by the time he arrived one of the cows was dead. Before the second one died, Dr. Wende diagnosed the disease as anthrax and took precausions accordingly. All of the other animals on the farm were vaccinated.

Dr. Wende has had the three animals creamated and the sick cows have been placed apart from the others. The existance of the disease hasd been kept secret from the neighboring farmers. Dr. Wende believes that the disease can be confined to the cattle on the one farm and has, therefore kept the farmers in ignorance.

There is said to be no sure cure for anthrax and vaccination is the only way to prevent the spread of the disease. It springs from a germ and the symptpoms are quote varied in their nature. The germ is long lived and human beings are as liable as animals to suffer.
